*****
A simplistic and a true to life film by Director John Carney
about two worn-out individuals, one Dan [Mark Ruffalo] a jobless music producer
and dealing with a broken marriage in distress the other Gretta [Keira
Knightley] a heart broken and incensed about her beau’s Dave Kohl [Adam Levine]
betrayal who is a famous singer and music composer.
The film begins with astute flashback with three focus point
where Dan hears gretta sing in a night club and is flabbergasted by her lyrics
and voice, second flashback shows gretta accompanied with Dave on assignment for
a music deal where she realizes he having affair with the music producer, third
flashback Dan has a conflicting argument with his former partner Saul [Mos Def]
and is shown the door permanently out of the music label which he was a co
founder too, hence next he is shown meeting her
daughter Violet [Hailee Steinfeld] and in distraught [ as he can’t
afford to pay the bill at a club] he leaves her back home.
Back in present he tries to persuade Gretta about her
potential about becoming a successful singer and a lyricist which he can produce,
to his importunate she agrees for the deal. And the frenzy starts for recording
songs with a shoe string budget, as they record the songs on the street-station-buildings
and nowhere.
Meanwhile a repentant Dave who is back in New York to promote
his new album calls Gretta and is seemingly happy to hear her foray into the
music world. Dave performs ‘Lost Stars’ live at a venue where he invites Gretta
to witness the fan following for the song which was written by her on a Christmas
night. As she see’s Dave perform the number she’s taken aback and realizes that
he is more passionate about his career
then love.
Gretta does a U turn by scrapping her deal with a music label
and instead distributes it with a social site to her fans.
A superlative performance by Knightley and Ruffalo which will
touch you and rekindle the passion for heartbroken and also a ray of hope to
the aspiring music lovers who are soulfully attached to their dreams of not making
big but making their presence felt. Movie not for an entertainment but surely
to make you euphoric in a simple way.
