Royal Enfield launches Himalayan- the most definitive motorcycle for your Himalayan adventure

Himalayan now available in India for booking starting March 17, 2016
Available in Maharashtra at Rs. 155,545 (Ex-showroom) and Rs. 178,872 (on-road) in Mumbai

Mumbai, India, March 16, 2016: Royal Enfield, the fastest growing motorcycle brand in the world, today launched the Himalayan—a motorcycle purpose-built for adventure and touring in the Himalayas. Bringing together 60 years of Himalayan riding experiences in a completely ground-up design, and powered by a new LS 410 engine, the Royal Enfield Himalayan paves the way for a purer, non-extreme and more accessible form of adventure touring in India. In fact, its extremely capable offroad capabilities make it adept for riding though potholed urban jungles as it does for treacherous mountain trails.

One of the most anticipated motorcycles of 2016, Royal Enfield Himalayan is available in two signature colour options—Granite and Snow and is open for bookings across all Royal Enfield dealerships across the country in a phased manner.

At the launch of the Himalayan, Mr Siddhartha Lal, MD & CEO, Eicher Motors Ltd. said, “Himalayan is the culmination of Royal Enfield’s 60 years of enduring history in its spiritual home—the Himalayas. Our single biggest insight in all these years of riding has been that the best motorcycle for the Himalayas is not one that tries to dominate its landscape, but one that is able to go with its flow. Large adventure tourers that currently define this category, do not fare well in the Himalayas as they are very heavy, extremely complicated, intimidating and not really designed for this environment. With its purpose-built ground-up design, the Himalayan is a simple and capable go-anywhere motorcycle that will redefine adventure touring in India.”

Built on a rugged duplex split cradle frame designed and developed by Harris Performance, the Himalayan is stable and agile in equal parts. A strong mono shock rear suspension with linkage allows for longer travel and delivers a smoother ride experience regardless of terrain. The Himalayan’s 220 mm ground clearance ensures it gobbles up obstacles comfortably be it in the Himalayas, rocky river beds or at stream crossings. An optimal wheel size combination allows for better control while riding over rocks and ruts.

The Himalayan is powered by a completely new and evolved overhead camshaft engine platform that forms the base for its new long stroke LS 410 engine. The all new engine delivers high torque and usable power at lower RPMs. This makes for smooth riding in higher gears at lower speeds, making it easy to climb hills, or to maneuver through traffic. Modern design and materials of the engine translate to increased efficiency and low maintenance, and the engine can go 10,000 kilometers between oil changes.

Speaking at the launch of the Himalayan, Mr Rudratej (Rudy) Singh, President Royal Enfield said, “What excites me about our new motorcycle, is that it fundamentally builds on Royal Enfield’s core philosophy of balancing aspiration with access. It allows both seasoned riders as well as enthusiasts to do more with just one motorcycle. The Himalayan serves the purpose of a seasoned rider and at the same time opens the roads (pun not intended) to many more people who will get the confidence that they can ride on and off the road less travelled, going beyond their day-to-day commuting needs.”

“Functionally - the Himalayan’s non-intimidating spartan design, a flat torque curve, accessible seat height and long suspension travel alongside the ease of ownership, make the Himalayan is an extremely versatile motorcycle that is adept for long rides while equally being the definitive choice to navigate our urban jungles. Towards creating and growing a new segment which offers an option for adventure loving motorcycling enthusiasts we are offering the new Himalayan at a price of Rs. 155,545 (Ex-showroom) in Maharashtra and Rs. 178,872 (on-road) in Mumbai” , Rudy added.

Touring utility is built inherently into the Himalayan. A 15 litre fuel tank provides a long range of approximately 450 kilometers. Luggage mounting points, for hard panniers, soft luggage and jerry cans are integral to the motorcycle’s design. A simple instrument cluster keeps track of speed, direction, ambient temperature, travel time, service intervals and multiple trip distances. Most importantly, an ergonomical sync between footpegs, handlebar & seat height provide a comfortable upright riding posture that is necessary for long rides. An accessible 800mm seat height with lower mass-balance ensure ease of planting feet on ground for complete control. Royal Enfield Himalayan comes fitted with dual-purpose tyres that lend a confident grip and performance across a range of conditions. In addition to complete braking control, the 300mm front and 240mm rear disc brakes help to reduce braking effort.

Royal Enfield has also launched meticulously designed, purpose-built protective riding gear that caters to the long range tourer travelling to unpredictable places, terrains and climates. The protective gear range includes the 4-season Royal Enfield Darcha riding suit made in collaboration with REV’IT; versatile touring jackets and trousers with Cordura, protective armour, removable thermal liners and breathable waterproof lining. The collection also has riding gloves, riding trousers and riding boots.

Royal Enfield has invested significant time and effort in testing the Himalayan extensively with experts and across multiple terrains for both off-road and on-road manners. Starting from the Bruntingthorpe airfield in UK to the race track in Sriperumbudur, Chennai; from off-road terrains to urban settings and then in real world riding conditions in the Himalayas; the motorcycle has clocked lakhs of kilometers and cumulative mileage before hitting the production line.

The Himalayan is more than the sum of its parts; not only does it deliver on its intent of being a purpose-built motorcycle for the Himalayas, it is also extremely versatile and designed to be your only motorcycle.

Pricing & Availability

Royal Enfield Himalayan will be available in Bangalore for Rs. 184,316 (on-road), in Kolkata for Rs. 181,517 (on-road), in Chennai for Rs. 175,840 (on-road), in Hyderabad for Rs. 176,580 (on-road), in Pune for Rs. 170,362 (on-road) and in Navi Mumbai for Rs. 171,065 (on-road).

Angry Birds get starring roles at Madame Tussauds

An amazing collaboration with Madame Tussauds takes Red, Chuck and Bomb to Madame Tussauds London! The unique digital experience will be in London from the end of April until July, before touring Madame Tussauds attractions around the world.

Angry Birds at Madame Tussauds will digitally bring to life one of the key scenes from the film in a 3-D backdrop and guests can step in, interact and star alongside Madame Tussauds' figures of explosive Bomb, speedy Chuck and furious Red.

"The aim is to create a living, breathing space that gives guests a real taste of the film," explains Kieran Lancini, Global Head of Media Relations for Madame Tussauds. "The digital content will change frequently and guests can take a selfie with Red, Bomb and Chuck and share them live. It's an exciting and new type of experience for Madame Tussauds and we are delighted to be working with Rovio to bring the colour, imagination and mischievous fun of The Angry Birds Movie to life.”

The experience continues Rovio’s mission to bridge the digital and physical worlds and extend the Angry Birds brand from its gaming origins. “We already have Angry Birds activity and play parks as well as theme park attractions, but Angry Birds at Madame Tussauds is something totally new,” commented Alex Lambeek, Chief Commercial Officer at Rovio Entertainment. “It really does marry the digital world with the physical, as animation and smart technology bring the movie to life around guests. And of course, Red, Chuck and Bomb get starring roles with their own Madame Tussauds figures taking centre stage.  It’s a truly memorable and different way to interact with the Angry Birds and sample a scene from the film in a fun environment.”

Soha Ali Khan & Javed Jaffrey hosts the 42nd India Gem & Jewellery Awards

  • Union Minister Shri Piyush Goyal graces IGJA 2015
  • 32 Nomination Awards & 5 Felicitation Award Winners
  • Over 364 nominations – an increase of around 34% from last year
Jaipur, March 14, 2016: The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) presented the ‘India Gem & Jewellery Awards (IGJA)’ 2015, its first event for year 2016 that recognises and rewards star performers of the Indian gem and jewelery sector, in the presence of Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy, Govt. of India at a glittering event in Jaipur’s Exhibition & Convention Centre. A total of 32 nomination awards and 5 felicitation awards were given away at GJEPC-IGJA 2015, which was hosted by actors Soha Ali Khan and Javed Jaffrey.  Lifetime achievement award was given to Dilipkumar V Lakhi of Lakhi Group.
Present on the occasion were Shri Rajpal Singh Shekhawat,  Hon'ble Urban Development and Housing Minister, Govt of Rajasthan., Shri Ramcharan Vohra (BJP MP, Jaipur), Shri Praveenshankar Pandya (Chairman, GJEPC), Shri Russell Mehta (Vice Chairman, GJEPC), Shri Kirit Bhansali (Convener IGJA, GJEPC), Shri Pramod Derewala (Rajasthan Region, Chairman,GJEPC), Smt. Nirupa Bhatt (Managing Director, GIA – India and  Middle East) and Shri Sabyasachi Ray (ED, GJEPC).

The GJEPC 42nd Annual Awards, exclusively open for GJEPC members, felicitated excellent and meritorious performances of gems and jewellery exporters, on the basis of their export performance, value additions, and investment on R&D among other parameters during the year 2015. A proprietary quantitative model developed by D&B, was used to shortlist the award winners, based primarily on computation of composite scores calculated by considering various financial and quantitative indicators. The final set of award winners was chosen by the esteemed jury.

Shri Praveenshankar Pandya, Chairman, GJEPC, said, “The 42nd India Gem & Jewellery Awards recognised the best performers of 2015 and paid rich tributes to the industry’s movers and shakers. I am glad to announce that we have received a phenomenal response this year with over 364 nominations – an increase of around 34% from last year - from all across India. It was important to celebrate their performance as it came amidst a declining world economy. India has more than 3 million artisans and craftsmen who have taken it to a leadership position in the diamond business. We are ranked fourth in jewellery but aspire to take the top spot subject to favourable policies and the right stimulus. We are doing extremely well in fashion jewellery but need to learn more in terms of fine jewellery.  But the Industry is currently grappling with problems of demand slowdown in the global markets. That’s why we urge the government to reconsider the excise duty levied on the industry in the Budget”
He further added that the duty would create challenges of compliance for an industry, 75% of which are in the unorganized sector and also it will open up scope for harassment by the tax officials.

Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon. Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy, Govt. of India, said, “Firstly, I hail 50 golden years of India’s gems & jewellery industry. GJEPC’s 42nd IGJA have a message for the winners and aspirants who have to constantly work harder to strive for excellence. The gems and jewellery industry should engage the Government in dialogue and help it get rid of the malaise in administration to make the system more responsible and accountable. The industry should come up with suggestions to bring more integrity into the system and help realise the Prime Minister’s dream. We have to work in collaboration to create a corruption-free new business environment for the Gen-Next. Build bridges of trust with the policy makers and then it will be easier to get your demands met. Ease of business will come in only through a two-way process.”

Shri Rajpal Singh Shekhawat, Rajasthan State Minister - Urban Development and Housing Minister, said, “India’s gems and jewellery industry is a rare combination of export capital intensive and labour intensive, which plays a significant role in the country’s balance of payment. Rajasthan exports Rs. 5,000 crore of gems and jewellery. It is known for Kundan and Meena jewellery design styles as well as for precious stones such as Tanzanite. We are planning to unveil a diamond bourse in the State as part of our constant endeavour to make Rajasthan the best destination for investment.”

Shri Kirit Bhansali, Convener – IGJA, GJEPC, said, “Last year was a very challenging one but our industry has coped up well as we have done so many times in the past. The gems and jewellery industry will soon become the topmost contributor to the nation’s economy. The Awards help us to experience and witness the passion, effort and dedication that entrepreneurs and enterprises have.”

GJEPC’s IGJA has become one of the foremost recognition platforms for the jewellery sector in India to encourage exports and award excellence in manufacturing, finance and innovation.  The jury members, who discussed, deliberated & eventually select the winners include: Smt. Nirupa Bhatt, Managing Director (India & ME), GIA, Shri Ajai Kumar, ex-CMD, Corporation Bank and Shri Pawan Bindal, Director, Dun & Bradstreet.

Salient features of IGJA 2015 include:
  • Continuation of the introduction of small, medium large category in diamond & precious metal with an objective to encourage entrepreneurship at every level and recognize MSME sector
  • Minimum number of application criteria to make the process more robust and ensure fair competition
  • Minimum export criteria to bring in more clarity & transparency to nominees
  • Awards to foreign buyers to recognize their contribution to Indian Gem & Jewellery Industry.
  • Third party assessment – Appointment of D&B to ensure the selection process moves to the next level by an expert organization who will bring in more transparency & authenticity in the selection process of the awardees.
  • Introduction of Jury process, representing from different fields to ensure judging on broader aspects at the time of finalizing the winners.
  • On the basis of the response received last year, GJEPC has decided to continue with the 3 categories, namely Most Innovative Company, Most Socially Responsible Company, Best Women Entrepreneur
GJEPC’s India Gem & Jewellery Awards, remodeled in 2014, has gained recognition and popularity from across the country and the world. Besides recognizing the efforts of the exporters, the Council also honoured the top foreign buyers from across the globe, international trade associations and the banks financing the gems and jewellery players. In addition to the acknowledgment of their global standards, GJEPC awarded those who contribute to the overall benefit of the Indian gems and jewellery industry.

About The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council India (GJEPC India)
Set-up in 1966, the GJEPC has over the years effectively molded the scattered efforts of individual exporters to make the gem and jewellery sector a powerful engine driving India's export-led growth. This apex body of the gem & jewellery industry has played a significant role in the evolution of the Indian gem and jewellery industry to its present stature. GJEPC is continuously working towards creating a pool of artisans and designers trained to international standards so as to consolidate the Indian jewellery industry and establish it as a prominent global player in the jewellery segment.
