“VIGITHON: A RUN FOR CORRUPTION-FREE INDIA

Union Bank of India organizes
“VIGITHON: A RUN FOR CORRUPTION-FREE INDIA”
Union Bank of India organized an anti-corruption run “VIGITHON: A RUN FOR CORRUPTION-FREE INDIA” on 25th October, Sunday in Mumbai. The run was organised as a pre-cursor to the “Vigilance Awareness Week” which is going to be observed from 26th October to 31st October, 2015. The run was flagged off by Shri Suresh Prabhu, Central Minister of Railways, Government of India.
It is worth to mention here that it is being organized at other metro centres across the country also. It is an attempt at bringing in all stakeholders together at a common platform to create sensitization against corruption. We have to start an inclusive battle against corruption.
Vigilance Awareness Week is observed every year since year 2000 as per the guidelines of the Central Vigilance Commission. The objective of observing it is to reaffirm our commitment to fight against corruption. The theme chosen every year is aimed at drawing the attention of all stakeholders to a specific concept at one time that needs to be focused during the year to expedite our fight against corruption. “Preventive Vigilance as a tool of Good Governance” is the theme for this year.
Good governance is an essential tool for achieving socio-economic development of the country. Most important requirement for ensuring good governance is absence of corruption. Preventive Vigilance proactively identifies the causative reasons of wrong doings at the initial stage and takes corrective action. It has vital role in promoting a culture of alertness.
Collective and participative approach of all stakeholders is required to combat corruption effectively. Unless we get full support and active participation of all stakeholders, our fight against corruption will not be successful. We request general public to rise to the occasion and share any wrong doings witnessed by them, boldly with the concerned authorities. This will be of great help to the country and your valuable contribution towards building of a corruption-free society.
With this objective in mind, Union Bank of India has conceptualized ‘VIGITHON- A RUN FOR CORRUPTION-FREE INDIA’. This is the first time in India that any Public Sector Bank/ Enterprise has organized any run against corruption.
Shri Arun Tiwari,CMD, Union Bank of India, Shri Rakesh Sethi, ED, Union Bank of India, Shri Atul Kumar,CVO, Union Bank of India and other dignitaries from Central, Western Railways and Union Bank Of India graced the occasion. Several school children, general public, customers and employees of the Bank also participated in ‘VIGITHON’. This run has created awareness about anti-corruption and strengthened their resolution for making our country corruption-free, thus enabling Good Governance in the country.

Huma Qureshi fulfills her mom’s wish.

The actress has been extensively shooting for her films in the last two to three months; first in London for the remake of Oculus and then in Jodhpur for her next, Gurinder Chadha's period film.

The actress had promised her mom to take her to Ajmer Sharif Dargah to seek blessings as she really wanted to. Owing to her busy shoot schedule that visit had been long pending.

So, recently, when Huma’s mom visited her on set to meet her and as Huma got some time on hand from the shoot on a turnaround day, the actress quickly decided to take her mom to Ajmer.

She immediately made the arrangements for the 3 hour drive and left for it.

Huma Qureshi’s mom was very happy and the two had a very peaceful time there.

" My mother had been wanting to visit the dargah for sometime now. Since I had a little time on hand, I decided to make this visit. It was truly a peaceful experience."

Huma shoots continuously for 100 days.

It's been a 100-day cinematic journey for Huma Qureshi and it shows no signs of ending as the actress's Malayalam debut, White, rolls in London on November 1 with a 40-day schedule.

The film, directed by Uday Ananthan, is an unusual love story between an older man, a billionaire, and a 25-year-old woman who meet in the Queen's City. Huma's co-star is South supremo, Mammootty, who is believed to have recommended her name for the film.

London has become a familiar acting ground for the actress, who has been shooting there for almost two months with sibling Saqib Saleem for the Indian remake of the 2013 horror film Oculus.

Huma's character (originally played by Karen Gillan) has to exonerate her brother (originally played by Brenton Thwaites) from a murder charge by proving that the death was caused by a menacing ghost. The Hollywood team is working closely with director Prawaal Raman on everything, from scripting to filming and post-production.

The actress's tryst with international productions continues with Gurinder Chadha's Viceroy's House, which is currently being shot in Jodhpur. Like the title suggests, this Delhi address was the home of the British rulers in India.

In 1947, for six months, Lord Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicolas Mountbatten, the last Viceroy, lived upstairs with his wife, Edwina, and daughter. Below, 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants took up residence.

"Huma's allotted a month and-a-half to the period drama which is set against the turbulent backdrop of the Partition. She is part of Lord Mountbatten's entourage and there's a beautiful love story woven in between her and another member of the staff," informs the source. "It's been all work for the actress but she's not cribbing given that they are all exciting projects."

‘Half Ticket’ is a new movie section at the festival for young adults and kids

MUMBAI, OCTOBER 23, 2015 –  On Friday, 30th October, ‘Dhanak (Rainbow)’ will be premiering in India at PVR Juhu, as a part of the Jio MAMI 17th Mumbai Film Festival with Star India. The festival has a new section called ‘Half Ticket’ which is going to showcase movies specially meant for kids and young adults. Dhanak which has won accolades in the international circuit, will open the festival in this category. The movie is written, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor and produced by Manish Mundra, Nagesh Kukunoor and Elahe Hiptoola.

Dhanak is the story of siblings, aged eight and ten who traverse across Rajasthan to fulfill a promise the elder sister made to her little brother. This year, the movie was honoured at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival with The Grand Prix of the Generation KPlus. The movie premiered at the festival and also received a special mention from Kids Jury there.

When asked what he was most looking forward to at the premiere of Dhanak, writer, director and co-producer Nagesh Kukunoor said, "It's exciting that Dhanak is opening the Half ticket section at MAMI. In its international festival journey so far, Dhanak has been shown to kids from many different countries. I'm really excited to see how Dhanak will be received by Indian kids and to see if the story resonates as strongly with them as it did elsewhere.”

Making its debut this year, Half Ticket will present an exciting slate of 25 films from across the world including fiction, non-fiction and animation. For most children this will be their first exposure to world cinema. Each screening will be followed by post screening discussions in order to nurture a future audience for independent films. 12 features and 10 shorts will compete for silver gateway awards given by the children's jury. The Jury for Half Ticket will consist of 14 kids aged 9 to 15 years from across Mumbai, 7 of whom will judge feature films and 7 will judge the shortfilms.

In addition to this, on Tuesday, 3rd November, a Film writing workshop will be conducted for aspiring school going film writers aged 12 to 15 years, by Imtiaz Ali, Zoya Akhtar and Avinash Arun (director of Killa).

Half Ticket has been curated and organised by Monica Wahi, who has been at the helm of affairs for several prestigious children's film festivals such as The Golden Elephant. She has also served as the 'Creative Head' of Children’s Film Society India (CFSI) and is the 'Founder Director' of South Asian Children’s Cinema Forum.

Monica Wahi, Curator, Half Ticket said "We hope we are not only able to nurture future audiences for independent films, but also nurture independent thinkers. Children and young adults are the largest audience of the country so how they choose to the see the world, becomes critical especially today with rising inequality and intolerance.”

MAMI deserves our applause and support for creating this rare and precious platform for children. And when an established filmmaker like Nagesh Kukunoor makes a film for children, we can also hope that the Indian film industry is beginning to take this audience seriously."

We want Jio MAMI to be shorthand for excellence in cinema.

ABOUT JIO MAMI
Mumbai - the financial capital of India is also the epicentre of the Indian film industry. The city plays such a major role in production and dissemination of Indian films and television programmes that it is widely known by its acronym 'Bollywood'. In 1997, a group of film industry stalwarts headed by late Hrishikesh Mukherjee founded the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) as a not-for-profit Trust. Their main objective was to organise an annual International Film Festival which the film industry and the country could be proud of. MAMI has been organising the festival for the last 16 years and aims to foster a climate of good cinema. MAMI engages people from all walks of life across the city and country who enjoy and love good cinema. It is Mumbai’s only film festival that is entirely created and run by film professionals and a group of members from corporate India. Appreciation of good cinema, stripped off all the limiting labels of art and commercial, can only come about through exposure to the best of films the world has to offer. The Festival is the first step in that direction.

In their Mission Statement in 1997, the MAMI Board of Trustees said, "We feel it is the need of the hour to disseminate and inculcate good cinema among Indian audiences. The only way to achieve this is to celebrate cinema by hosting an International Film Festival in Mumbai, India 's film and entertainment capital. MAMI (Mumbai Academy of Moving Image) is committed to start Mumbai's first independent international film festival organized by practicing film makers."

In the seventies when travellers could visit countries like Thailand, Hong Kong & Nepal with marginal official processing, Charles Sobraj used this to his advantage and was on a sadistic murder spree. Young backpackers, hash stoners and idealists from the West were found lost in their fantasies along the Asian Hippie Trail. Charles made sure they reached the permanent state of elevation. His killings would range anything between ten such individuals, up to twenty-four (mostly women). Although the real figure still remains ambiguous.
He is half-Vietnamese, half-Indian, fluent in various languages, a feline charismatic man with big eyes. Apart from his attractive demeanour, Charles’ personality has high resonance with suave fictional characters like James Bond, Tom Ripley & Hannibal Lecter. No wonder, he once introduced himself to a reporter, echoing Bond as, “This is Charles, Charles Sobraj”. His intellectual bent of mind, found repose in the works of German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche. Fully familiar with his book ‘Beyond Good & Evil’, Charles never really considered his killings to have defied his own moral code. In fact, in his confessions, he referred to them as ‘cleaning’ in the light of being a criminal Superman. Using his know-how of what budget travellers needed and his expertise in gem selling, he had his way with all his ulterior motives.
But there was method to the madness as his killings were stamped with his trademark style. He befriended and advised the travellers for best places to eat, teach hacks of gemstone buying and bring them to his Bangkok apartment (shared by his French-Canadian girlfriend) and murdered them. The ritual began by first drugging their drinks and then proceed to choke or stab them until dead. Sometimes, he would take a more hostile route by setting the body on fire – in few cases the victims were investigated to be burnt alive. His other favourite methods were to make the victims ill by using diarrhoea pills and itching powder. The intention was to make them weak and totally dependent on him so that he could stifle them, disfigure their bodies with a knife or just shoot them. He was then attributed with the title of ‘The Bikini Killer’ when the bodies of his victims (Teresa Knowlton & Vitaji Hakim) were discovered in swimsuits. This entire murder rampage culminated with his desire to travel the world using the identities and belongings of the deceased.
One of the most interesting element of his criminal record, has been his practice of using psychology as an underlying element. He could easily break into people’s minds and had a knack for spotting flaws in them. In order to suit his evil brilliance, he would then re-shape them as and when required. Until his victims were viciously murdered, they probably found him to be one of the kindest and genuinely friendly people. On being asked, the pre-requisites of being a murderer, Charles had replied that, “Either they have too many feelings and cannot control themselves, or they have no feelings. It is one of the two.” His captivating charm and smile has indeed been an instrument of deceit to hide the raging storm inside his head.
His pursuits have led him to spend most of his time either on the run or in prisons across France, South East Asia  and the Subcontinent. He has done it all from extravagant indulgence in women affairs to criminal conquests with his then wife Chantal Companion, later his brother Andre to escapes from jail (mainly induced by bribery), not once but five times - earning yet another title of ‘The Serpent’. His ability to attract women using his smooth conversationalist skills was quite evident. He was known to have had four Parsi girlfriends during his times in Mumbai, while his lawyer as well couldn’t help herself from falling for him. In Thailand, Charles found an adventurous female traveller Marie Leclerc who soon turned out to be his most devoted follower and henceforth they pulled off a few scams together. Later when he was back in India, he also made a woman clan with Barbara & Mery Ellen in order to trick French tourists.
So there you have it, an intellectual criminal who not only used his charms to fulfil his motives but also could brainwash people into following him with complete devotion. He had a colourful personality, using which he travelled all across the globe, generating his own legendary testaments. Now as always, his intriguing journey has caught the eye of filmmakers like Prawaal Raman, to delve deeper from what’s on the surface and explore the intricacies of the mystery called Charles Sobraj. The song, ‘Jab Chaye Tera Jadoo’ from the Prawaal’s upcoming movie ‘Main Aur Charles’ is a clear depiction of the extravagance of his lifestyle and his affinity towards women alongside his criminal record.
