MARUTI SUZUKI AUTOCAR YOUNG DRIVER AWARD 2015

Mumbai, March 21st, 2016: In terms of absolute numbers more people die in road crashes in India than anywhere else in the world, including the more populous China. According to a WHO report, there is one death on the Indian roads every five minutes and this is expected to escalate to one death every three minutes by 2020.

The Maruti Suzuki Autocar Young Driver was established in 2009 in an effort to make India's roads safer, by spreading the message of safe and responsible driving amongst the youth.

Now in its seventh edition, the Maruti Suzuki Autocar Young Driver Award 2015 concluded at the Institute of Driving & Traffic Research (IDTR) grounds, in a glittering function in New Delhi on March 19, 2016. Mohit Kumar Malik (24) from Faridabad beat over 4,10,000 other hopefuls to be crowned India's safest young driver and win a Maruti Suzuki Alto 800.

The contest which is open to all Indian driving license holders up to the age of 30 attracted 41,292 entries from all corners of the country when online registrations opened in December 2015. The online quiz whittled the field down to 810 candidates for phase two. They were tested on their practical driving skills at Maruti Driving Schools in 42 major cities across India. In the third phase, 30 finalists were flown to Delhi for the grand finale where they were judged on the basis of 20 parameters pertaining to safety, vehicle control, theory knowledge and its application while driving. With this crown Mohit Kumar Malik takes over as the brand ambassador for road safety from last year's winner Pranay Agarwal.

To engage the youth of the country in the subject of road safety, Maruti Suzuki Autocar Young Drivers Award initiated a series of fun videos with funny-man José Covaco taking digs at the unsafe driving practices across the country, pitching one Indian city against the other. Viewers were invited to join the debate on #RoadSafetyWars.

Mr. R. S. Kalsi, Executive Director (Marketing & Sales) at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. said “As India’s leading car maker, it is our responsibility to play a proactive role towards enhancing road safety and creating awareness about high driving standards. The Maruti Suzuki Autocar Young Driver Contest is one such initiative. Safe Driving is a habit that needs to be inculcated in people at a very early age. An annual event in our calendar, it provides a perfect platform for young drivers to improve their driving skills. Because at Maruti Suzuki, we believe that better drivers makes better roads.”

Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Hormazd Sorabjee, Editor at Autocar India, said, “Autocar India takes pride in being associated with Maruti Suzuki for this initiative, now in its seventh edition, which aims to make young drivers aware of the dangers of rash and perilous driving. Driving responsibly is our motto, be it in any car or any terrain. We hope to reach out to the youth of the country and educate them in driving safe and maintaining road discipline.”

Canara HSBC OBC Life in association with WWF India organizes Pedal for Planet 2016 for Earth Hour

Pedal for the Planet 2016 - Delhi takes to the streets for a greener tomorrow!

New Delhi, 19 March 2016: Canara HSBC Oriental Bank of Commerce Life Insurance in association with WWF India today organized Pedal for the Planet 2016, a Cyclathon and walkathon to raise awareness about, and celebrate, the world’s largest environmental campaign – Earth Hour 2016.

In its tenth year, Earth Hour 2016 is a call for governments, organizations and people to move from discourse and discussion to concrete climate action. Earth Hour 2016 will be celebrated on Saturday, 19 March from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m, local time. In India, the focus of the campaign this year is on the potential of solar energy as a viable and renewable source of power. Earth Hour is calling on citizens across the country to support not only the campaign by switching off non-essential lights for the hour, but also the government’s pledge to move toward renewable energy for a sustainable future. Blessed with approximately 300 clear sunny days, India has a capacity to harness 5,000 trillion kWh of energy per year - a lot more than the country’s total annual energy requirement. WWF-India’s Earth Hour campaign advocates a solar-powered future by urging its supporters to “go solar.
The campaign is being endorsed this year by cricketer Shikhar Dhawan. Speaking about his association with the cause, Dhawan said, “I believe climate change is the biggest global problem that we face today. It is a problem that we need to solve together. Like cricket, Earth Hour brings people together. I would urge people to come together and find newer, smarter ways to help save the planet.” He also asked cricket fans all over the country to switch off all other non-essential lights for the hour and watch the historic India Pakistan T20 ICC World Cup match scheduled for 19 March in the dark and said, “As we chase our dream of becoming World Champions again, we are counting on you to help us realize our dream of a greener planet! Let’s stand together against climate change.”

From bicycling clubs to toddlers, the residents of Delhi NCR enthusiastically took to the track to promote the cause of Earth Hour and ask people to switch off their lights during the hour later that night. Pedal for the Planet 2016 is also being supported by Firefox Bikes, who are providing cycles for the event.

Mr. Anuj Mathur, Chief Executive Officer, Canara HSBC Oriental Bank of Commerce Life Insurance said, “We at Canara HSBC Oriental Bank of Commerce Life Insurance are fully committed towards the cause and pledge our support for Earth Hour in Pedal/ Paidal for the Planet initiative by partnering with WWF-India for the 8th consecutive year. We have always encouraged our employees to pledge to use resources responsibly and continue to identify ways in which we can reduce carbon footprint for a greener planet. As a life insurance company, it is essential that we further the cause of urging people to lead a healthy life style. We therefore encourage all to adopt these measures in their daily life so that we leave a better planet for future generations".

Speaking about the campaign and the event, Mr. Ravi Singh, Secretary General & CEO, WWF-India said, “Every year, since 2009, hundreds of citizens of Delhi NCR have been gathering in an enormous show of support for Earth Hour at the Pedal for the Planet cyclothon. Pedal for the Planet is a WWF-India initiative with the objective of raising awareness about Earth Hour. It also helps promote a healthier, greener and more sustainable lifestyle at an individual and collective level. The event is a step towards encouraging positive climate action in all forms.”

As India’s most iconic landmarks like the India Gate, Gateway of India, the Rashtrapati Bhawan and the Lotus Temple, among others, prepare to switch off their lights for Earth Hour, Earth Hour 2016 has also received support from the government, corporates and organizations across the country, and celebrities like Shikhar Dhawan, Amitabh Bachchan,
Harsha Bhogle, Sania Mirza, Parambrata Chatterjee, among others.
