There is no correct time for a person to be reborn. This is something that is waiting at every moment to happen to you and it’s up to us to choose to be reborn at that time. This is the ethos of my exhibition and with each brush stroke this evening to the beautiful melodies that were played by the brilliant musicians present; I found myself being reborn and being transported back into a new reality.”

It made me want to get up and dance while the performance was on. I hope that the art scene will see many more such amalgamations of visual and performing arts. All in all, The Prelude To Reborn was a beautiful evening, leaving the audiences hungering for more. Vidya tries 122 looks for her detective role

Vidya is an ace actor. The talented actor walks lengths to get into the skin of her character.

This time around Vidya who plays a detective in her upcoming next, Bobby Jasoos tried umpteenth looks for the film. Vidya underwent 122 changes out of which they shortlisted 10 - 12 looks which will be seen in the film.

The make-up artist put together different character looks for Vidya. They tried 6- 8 looks a day while Vidya patiently sat through the make-up session to see which of looks most realistic and relates to the narrative of the story.

The entire process took a lot of the time but it was key for her role.

There were different looks which she tried like of a teacher, a fisherwomen, a dabbawala, a peon, a lawyer, an astrologer to name a few

They took more than 15 days to shortlist the looks and they even documented the entire process. However sourcing the looks and sketching the character nuances started much before. There was an entire team dedicated who were identifying and putting together the look.

They were elaborate costumes with nuanced detailing. The entire team was involved in the process as it was key to figure this bit out before the film went on floors.

Once the look was shortlisted they underwent workshops for the mannerism and personality traits she would have to imbibe in the film

Vidya will be getting into the garb of varied characters while she essays the role of a detective in the film.

As an actor, it was quirky yet challenging role which Vidya has delivered brilliantly.

Says Dia Mirza "“The entire process of zeroing down on the final disguises that Vidya dons in Bobby Jasoos was one of fun filled discovery and experiments!!!!! Our costume designer Theia and our special make up artiste Vidyadhar, worked tirelessly to conjure looks that would be entertaining to watch, whilst remaining in sync with the demands of the script. At the end I am thrilled that people are collectively wowed by the many transformations of the very versatile Vidya Balan”

Rani Mukerji’s character in Mardaani takes inspiration from a real- life cop

Rani Mukerji’s character in Mardaani takes inspiration from a real- life cop posted at Mumbai’s crime branch

Rani Mukherji’s character in her film, Mardaani, is apparently based on a real- life lady police officer from Mumbai crime branch, who solved several child trafficking cases in the city.

ATS chief Himanshu Roy says, “ Rani approached us when she was preparing for her role. She wanted to play it realistically and we have just helped her do that.” Roy adds that Rani wanted to know in detail about the challenges faced by cops and the lifestyle we lead. So we put her in touch with two lady officers from the crime branch. She then spent some time with them to get a better idea about their lives.” Roy also reveals that the actress went on to meet the lady police offer whose life has inspired Rani’s character in the film. “ I cannot reveal her name but yes, she was an officer at the crime branch,” he says.

It maybe noted here that the cast and crew of the film have signed a non- disclosure clause with the production house. This means that they are not at liberty to share any information about the film with the media at this stage.

But it is known that the film’s story revolves around a teenage girl who is kidnapped and smuggled out the city by child traffickers and how Rani’s character embarks on a hunt for the girl.

KASHISIH Rainbow Warrior awards for Ashok Row Kavi and Wendell Rodricks

KASHISIH Rainbow Warrior awards for Ashok Row Kavi and Wendell Rodricks

Bollywood actor Celina Jaitley presents award at cosining ceremony of 5th KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival

Ashok Row Kavi, gay activist and founder of Humsafar Trust and Wendell Rodricks, one of India’s top fashion designers, were awarded the KASHISH Rainbow Warriors Award on Sunday May 25, 2014. The award instituted this year  by KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival recognises the work of persons in furthering LGBT rights.

Bollywood actor and former Miss India Celina Jaitley presented Ashok Row Kavi with a trophy and a rainbow sash at the glittering closing ceremony of the fifth KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival at the iconic Liberty Cinema.
Celina Jaitley who has been voval in her support of equal rights and the fight against section 377 that criminalises same sex relationships, said that ``it was an honour to present the award to one of India’s first and for decades the only gay rights activist.’’

``We live in difficult times following the Supreme Court verdict recriminalising same sex relationships and a turbulent political climate,’’ said Ashok Row Kavi. ``Don’t rely on politicians or Parliament to come to the aid of the community or change laws. We all fought for decades to get the law changed. The fight now will have to be fought by us,’’ he added.

Wendell Rodricks who was in Bhutan and could not be present to receive his award sent a message: ``My dear friends, from over the rainbow in Bhutan, I send you my best wishes. I regret that I am not with you all this evening to celebrate the closing ceremony of what has been a celebratory week of LGBT cinema from around the world. This year 2014 has truly begun as a year for the LGBT community in India. Despite the Supreme Court’s verdict on Section 377, the transgender community got sexual status recognition, a bearded drag queen won the Eurovision contest in the face of much opposition from regressive Russia and here at home an openly gay man received the Padma Shri. And now you give me this award. How honoured and happy am I! Thank you everyone at Kashish. More power to us all. More peace, freedom and equality in India and the world around us. Soldier on. Stay happy. And gay!’’

Festival Sridhar Rangayan said:"While KASHISH was envisioned to be a film festival, over the years it has grown to become much more - a mainstream platform for exhibition and distribution of LGBT themed films, a space for discussion on LGBT issues and cinema, and more importantly one of the biggest pride events in India. It is also become a place where we acknowledge, preserve and archive Indian and world LGBT history. We felt it is the perfect platform to recognize the outstanding efforts of individuals in India who have contributed to LGBT visibility and empowerment by instituting an award that perpetuates this history in people's consciousness."

In the first year KASHISH has chosen to bestow the Rainbow Warrior Award on two remarkable individuals have mainstreamed queer visibility and been unapologetically outspoken - Ashok Row Kavi and Wendell Rodricks.

``I remember the first Kashish Film Festival which was inaugurated  in the basement of a hotel and today it has moved to this grand venue,’’ said Celina Jaitley. ``A lot of conversations are needed to change the society’s attitude and mindsets, but nothing reaches people like entertainment,’’ she added. The actor, whose recent singing debut with the song ``The Welcome’ about marriage equality has gone viral on Youtube, with over quarter of a million views in the last two weeks, the highest viewed United Nations video. Celina said that she continues to support equal rights for lesbian, gay and transgender persons and the fight against section 377 that criminalises same sex relationships.

"It is really important to support a festival like KASHISH which offers a platform for Indian and international films that otherwise can never be seen in India. Our acting school has always recognised excellence in cinema and we are happy to support the top awards at KASHISH. It is also our commitment to raise awareness about social issues", said Anupam Kher  in a message.

Richard Bale, Consul General  of Canada while accepting the awards on behalf of the filmmakers and actor said that he was delighted that Tru Love had won top awards at KASHISH 2014. ``Canada has always been the beacon for equal rights and its films have proven that it is not only willing to deal with difficult subjects but also achieve cinematic excellence,’’ said Bale.

Vasudev Rane, Director of Photography of Mitraa, accepted the award on behalf of Ravi Jadhav. ``Winning an award will motivate us to make more films and come back to the festival in the future,’’ said Rane.

``Its an honour to win an award for ones very first film,’’ said Sharon Flynn adding that it was a privilege to win an award instituted in the memory of India’s first openly gay filmmaker Riyad Wadia.

Sridhar Rangayan, Festival Director, said that KASHISH MIQFF in its fifth year had grown bigger with support from corporate, development agencies and its successful crowd funding initiatives. ``Filmmakers who make films on LGBT themes find it difficult to reach out to a wider audience or find mainstream spaces to showcase their works. KASHISH serves as a platform for filmmakers who make films on LGBT themes. The awards serve as an inspiration to the filmmakers and a recognition of their efforts to make cutting edge films on LGBT themes,'’ Rangayan.

``Back in the 1990s people came in burqas for meetings on LGBT issues.  Today hundreds of people have come to see films on LGBT themes in a mainstream venue in the heart of South Mumbai over the five days of the festival without a mask. There lies the victory of the festival. KASHISH is about us,’’ said Vivek Anand, CEO of Humsafar Trust, co organiser of KASHISH MIQFF 2014.

Nazir Hoosein, owner of the iconic Liberty Cinema, the venue of the festival said that he was overwhelmed at the response to the festival `` I was overwhelmed when it started and the overwhelming continues. Let this endeavour continue; let this awareness continue,’’ said Hoosein, adding that he wants Liberty Cinema to be the permanent venue for the festival.

The glittering closing night and awards ceremony saw performances by India’s first transgender and hijra dance troupe Dancing Queens, Bharatnatyam exponent Jitesh Bangera, singer Sushant Digvikar and standup comic Nick Pillow.

KASHISH was held between May 21 - May 25, 2014, at the iconic Liberty Cinema, New Marine Lines and Alliance Française de Bombay (AFB). The festival screened  154 films from 31 countries - of these 11 are World, 17 International and 39 Asian premieres.
