Easily one of the greatest films of all time, Casablanca is a romantic drama starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman about an American expatriate who meets a former lover, with unforeseen complications. Set in unoccupied Africa during the early days of World War II, Casablanca went on to win three Academy Awards, including the Oscar for Best Film that year.
Sunday, September 7 : Doctor Zhivago (1965)
One of the highest grossing films of all time, Doctor Zhivago is the story of a Russian doctor/poet who, although married, falls for a political activist’s wife and experiences hardships during the Bolshevik Revolution.
Monday, September 8 : Gone With the Wind (1939)
Starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh the epic romance tells the story of Scarlett O’Hara and her romantic pursuit of Ashley Wilkes and her marriage to Rhett Butler. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War and Reconstruction era, the story which is told from the perspective of white Southerners has received ten Academy Awards, including Best Film.
Tuesday, September 9 : The Notebook (2004)
A cult film from the 2000s, The Notebook is a period drama set in 1936, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, about a poor and passionate young man who falls in love with a rich young woman and gives her a sense of freedom.
Wednesday, September 10 : A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
Labeled one of the greatest American movies of all time, A Streetcar Named Desire is the story of the disturbed Southern belle Blanche DuBois who moves in with her sister in New Orleans and is tormented by her brutish brother-in-law while the new and steamy urban ambiance is a shock to Blanche’s nerves.
